Keighley Table Tennis Centre: Infrastructure is ready, but development only begins when the ball stops rolling

This is not a match report, nor a tactical breakdown of a world-class player. It is a story about grassroots table tennis in England, told through an unremarkable building in West Yorkshire. Keighley Table Tennis Centre sits on the second floor of a business centre, behind a facade that reveals almost nothing about what is inside. But inside, the visitor finds a clean, spacious training space with eight tables, each individually enclosed by surrounds and netting, a kitchen and refreshment area, and a separate classroom and boardroom. Andy Bray runs the centre while working abroad for significant periods. Steve Brunskill, Table Tennis England’s Coach Developer, visited and saw the club’s potential. A Level 1 / Coaching Assistant course has been partly delivered there, attended by ten learners from varied playing and coaching backgrounds. The facility itself is already defined by its rows of enclosed tables, which reduce ball interference and make it suitable for structured coaching courses. The most important signal is not the number of tables, but the plan to hold a serving-focused continuing professional development (CPD) session. This is a functional detail: serving is a core technique. Even at grassroots level, quality of serve and serve-receive shapes the rhythm of play before the first rally even begins. A dedicated CPD on serving suggests that the Coach Development team regards this as a development bottleneck for local coaches. From a structural perspective, Table Tennis England is introducing a new coaching membership for 2026/27, with a Coach Plus tier that offers additional support from the Coach Development team. This signals a shift from a one-off qualification model toward a longer relationship with coaches. For Keighley, that timing matters: ten learners today could become the club’s future volunteer coaches tomorrow. The main risk is not infrastructure. It is succession. The club depends heavily on a single visible leader who works abroad; the sustainability of the centre depends on building a new group of coaches.
