Canizares calls for radical Mestalla boycott to force Peter Lim into Valencia sale
Valencia CF have just endured a 0-5 shock against Barcelona at Mestalla, a humiliating defeat that left the club bottom of La Liga. But for Santiago Canizares, the situation goes far beyond one bad result. The legendary former goalkeeper is not merely asking for tactical changes or more commitment from players. He is calling for radical action: fans should walk away and leave Mestalla empty to embarrass the club's hierarchy and force owner Peter Lim to sell Valencia.
According to an article by Marca, public anger reached boiling point after the 5-0 loss to Barcelona. Valencia lost more than three points. They sank to the bottom of the table and looked increasingly likely to be dragged into a relegation battle. Canizares believes the problems inside the club are deeper than anything seen on the pitch.
Speaking on the Tiempo de Juego show on Cadena COPE, Canizares told Paco Gonzalez: “The problem is not losing three points; the problem is far more serious and many people want a public uprising. A complete and repeated emptying of Mestalla would draw attention and would at least embarrass the hierarchy.” He also questioned whether Peter Lim knows the state of the team, watches matches, or cares at all. Canizares warned that the owner will only become active when he sees the whole operation falling apart.
The former Spain international described Valencia as “mortally wounded” and praised the loyalty of supporters who still fill Mestalla despite years of disappointment. He called Valencia “a goldmine of a business” and said the club has an extraordinary fan base. Canizares also revealed that a takeover attempt occurred less than a year ago but was ignored by Peter Lim. He insisted social pressure is the only way to force the owner to put the club up for sale.
Canizares also criticised local politicians for failing to use the Nou Mestalla rezoning opportunity as leverage against Peter Lim. He said only the people can save Valencia, even though it is unfair to ask them to do so.
Valencia now face an extremely difficult trip to Sevilla on Friday evening. Coach Carlos Corberan is under severe pressure after the heavy defeat to Barcelona. The team looks short of quality, and the threat of relegation to Segunda Division is real. The next result could shape the rest of their season. Meanwhile, the idea of an empty Mestalla is gaining strength as fans lose patience with the club's owner. Canizares believes that leaving the stadium empty is the last effective weapon left to save the club from a deeper crisis.
